Overview

Roopkund, situated at an altitude of 16000ft in the district of
Chamoli in Garhwal region (State of Uttarakhand), is often called
Mystery Lake or Skeleton Lake. This magnificent route not only
unfolds the mythological characters and related stories while
walking from one ridge to another but indeed delivers stunning
views of snow clad peaks like Trishul, Nandaghunti, Chowkhamba,
Neelkanth and others. The trekking trail in the lower altitude goes
through interior vilalges, inside the Baanj Oak and then Kharsu Oak
forests to finally Rhododendrons. Around ~ 3300m/11000 ft the
Tree Line recedes and alpine meadow or locally called “Bugiyal”
starts. Sprawling meadow, common to this altitude in Himalaya,
but this picturesque span needs a special mention. Mighty
Himalayan peaks peep behind the wild flower carpeted grassy
slopes. On higher altitude barren rocky terrain coupled with snow
and ice ignite the adventurous mind.

Itinerary

Day 1: Start from Kathgodam (8,000 Ft) To Wan.

The valley in which Wan village is situated is know for its exquisite beauty
and untouched grennery and last village at the end of a motorable road
and is the base camp to begin the RoopKund Trek. You will be picked
up from Kathgodam at around 6 am and driven to the base camp in
Wan. The 12 hour drive is filled with curved roads, scenic valleys and
views of mountain ranges in the distance. On arrival in Wan, you can
settle down in your accommodation and explore the town a little. The
mighty Nanda Ghunti is visible from the town. Come night and you
retire for the day in anticipation of the trek next morning.

Day 2: Wan (8,000 Ft) To Ghairoli patal (10,000 Ft).

The trail goes through the Wan village and giant deodar trees.
The climb is gradual. It will take 4-5hrs time to reach Ghairoli
Patal. It is the last camping site onwards to Bedni Bugyal.
Then you will see the see Wan river below the Raun Bagadthat rushes
to meet the Bedni Ganga. There you also will see the Lammergeiers,
that spread their massive wings to catch the eddies.

Day 3: Ghairoli Patal – Patar Nachauni via Bedni Bugyal .

Here clouds glide over the ridge in slow motion. You can see many horses
here pasturage on the bounty of nature. Here you have to climb or walk
around 5 kilometres to reach Bedni Bugyal from Ali Bugyal. During this
walk, you also can put your shoes off to feel the tender touch of grasses
on your toes. In these areas, the weather fluctuates a lot, and here you
also can witness the beauty of wild sunrise. Don’t forget to carry your
raincoat as you can get rain sometimes in this region.

The trail to Patar Nachauni climbs out of the Bedni campsite in
a gradual, easy meander. From your Bedni campsite you can
follow it with your eye for 3 kms before it disappears into a
saddle in the mountain. When you cross the saddle, the trek
exposes you to the other side of the ridge. The scenery is
differently mesmerizing. For the first time you also see
remnants of the winter snow on the mountain flanks (on the
other side). It is still meadow country and below you are the
meadows of Ghora Lotani, the last stop for the horses. Beyond Ghora
Lotani the meadows merge into the mountain side.

Day 4: – Patar Nachauni to Bhagwabhasa via Kalu Vinayak.

The climb to Kalu Vinayak is a steep zig-zag up the mountain side and
will take you to 14,500 ft. The distance isn’t much, and the zig-zag
trails makes you gain height very rapidly. The trail from Kalu Vinayak
to Bhagwabasa is easy and gently sloping downwards. Bhagwabasa is
2 kms away and you can see the Bhagwabasa huts if you follow the
trail with your eye. The trail meanders through snow patches. Be
careful on these snow patches. In June, by mid-day, they get soft and
you can find yourself sinking to your knees in them. Step gingerly,
quickly and skip your way across them. Better still, skirt around them.

Day 5: Bhagwabhasa to RoopKund Return to Patar Nachauni.

Altitude: 14,100 ft (4,298 m) to 15,750 ft (4,800 m) to 16,000 ft/4,877
m (at Junargali) and down to 12,200 ft (3,719 m)
Roopkund is a crater on the mountain face, a dip at the cusp of the
mountain. It is much bigger than what most internet pictures suggest.
All around are snowy flanks of the mountain. You have to actually
climb down 50 ft to reach the edge of the lake. GPS readings suggest
that Roopkund is not more than 15,750 feet. Whatever the altitude,
you will feel the thinness of the air. Climbing a few steps takes your.

Day 6: Patar Nachauni to Wan Village via Bedni

There is a sense of elation as you return through Bedni. And the oak
forest over Wan is just the icing on the cake that you want. Retrace
your path to Bedni Bugyal. Pass the Bedni campsite and take the trail
heading to the right and below. 20 minutes later, you get to the tree
line and sharp descent that signals the end of the meadows. Watch for
the descending trail on your right. The main trail moves ahead to Ali
Bugyal.

Day 7: – Wan to Kathgodam/Dehradun.
